Lake Okeechobee Fishing Guides: First Cold Front of the Year!

This morning we were greeted by the first cold front of the year, the water temps in the lake dropped about 6 degrees overnight. My Trip today was with Bill & John Tribbett, Bill and I go back many years and it was a pleasure to fish with he and his son. The drop in temperature had an adverse affect on the fish slowing the bite somewhat, we managed to catch 37 fish, with a big fish for the day of 6lbs 2oz, which was Johns biggest bass ever. Once the sun got up it was pleasant but very windy, all in all another day in paradise!

Lake Okeechobee Fishing Guides: Ryan Newman, Nascar Race Team Fishes Okeechobee

Today was the annual Ryan Newman Racing Team Shiner tournament. After racing at Homestead on Sunday and the close of the Nascar season, Ryan and his entire team came for a day of fishing. There were 40 some team members all trying to catch the biggest 3 fish limit of bass. This year I had the pleasure of fishing with 2 members of Ryans pit crew, June-Bug Moody & Chris Brewer. Both of these guys are excellent fishermen and it was evident they spend a lot of time on the water right from the start. After leaving Okeechobee Fishing Headquarters and launching our boats at Okeetantie park we proceeded directly to a spot I have been fishing for a few days. Today was not a disappointment. Each of the competing teams had 10 dozen shiners to use, we went through our shiners in about 4 hours catching seventy fish. We never got a really big fish today, but we did manage to Win The Tournament! with our 21lbs of Okeechobee Bass, we had 6 fish over six lbs today and 1 just over 7lbs, our 3 biggest fish won the event much to our surprise! There were several huge fish caught by other teams 3 8lb fish, 1 10lb fish, but none of the other teams could match our catch of 21 lbs.

Every one that fished had a great time, after the tournament the local Ranger dealer Ellis Cole fed us a great barbecue, & then presented the trophys. A great and fun time!

Lake Okeechobee Fishing Guides: Texans visit the Big “O”

Lake Okeechobee Fishing Guides

Today was spent with Doug Gresham & his wife Laura, who hail from Texas. Doug & his wife have been working the hurricane damage from New Orleans to Florida. They are both Insurance adjustors. We had a good day on the Lake today catching 45 bass in our 4 hours of fishing. Doug did suffer some heartbreak however, he hooked and fought beautifully a massive bass for several minutes, only to have the hook pull from the jaw of this big fish at the last possible second, 10 feet from the boat to be exact. His wife became very adept at hooking, and landing, fish after fish. All in all we had a great time, I am sure Doug And his wife will return to fish Lake Okeechobee again.

Lake Okeechobee Fishing Guides: Big Bass Bonanza!

The big fish bite we have been experiencing for the last 3 weeks continues. I fished with 2 gentlemen from Maryland today & and has been the pattern we started in some running water.
We caught 12 fish in the first hour and then made several moves where we caught 5 or 6 fish at each stop. We then ran to another spot and as we passed this area I had been fishing previously we saw fish chasing bait, and then they came up in a school knocking shad out of the water. We stopped and anchored and proceeded to catch 34 fish from this area. Most of these fish were in the 2lb range with a couple near 3lbs. We were down to our last few wild shiners and they were huge baits, the first bait we put out set for about 5 minutes before a fish blew up on it , engulfing it, it turned out to be and 8lb 4oz bass, which was long and thin from already spawning out. The next wild shiner was bigger than the first one and did not set 5 minutes before another fish blew up on it, this fish turned out to be a 9lb 14oz giant that had also already spawned out. This was the largest bass of Bob’s life so needless to say he was quite thrilled.

Lake Okeechobee Fishing Guides: Spawning Bass on Lake Okeechobee!

Lake Okeechobee Fishing Guides

Today I fished with 2 gentlemen from Rochester Indiana, both were skilled fishermen, who spend a lot of time on the water. Our first move from the ramp was to Nubbin Slough where the water has been flowing for 3 weeks and the fishing has been outstanding, we spent an hour and a half there trying to coax a bite out of the fish we could see on the sonar graph. We never caught a fish there so we moved to another moving water site where the results were more of the same, lots of junk fish, gar, pickerel & such but again no bass. It was at this point we decided to go out into the lake. For the next two hours we caught fish after fish. Our total for the 1/2 day trip was 37 bass, the largest being a 7lb 30z female swollen with roe. We had 7 fish over 4 lbs today which is rather incredible in itself. All in all it was a great day on the Big “O” . Nearly
all of the female bass we caught today were fat with eggs and ready to spawn.

Okeechobee Fishing Report: Big Fish Bonanza!

The big fish showed up this weekend , and in a big way, I had a half day trip with Fred & Sheila Schlasly of Miami. In our 4 hours of fishing we caught 29 bass on live wild shiners. In the last 4 days there have been numerous large fish caught, a 10lber, two 9lbers, three 8lbers and too many sevens to mention all caught on live wild shiners.

Not to leave out the artificial bite, it was kicking too! Saturday marked the first Christian team Tournament held since the hurricane and it was big! The winning bag was 32 lbs plus, second was 28lbs plus and the big catches continued down the line. Sunday the HeadTurners3 tournament trail kicked off from Okeetantie and the results were impressive as well. The winning sack was once again 32lbs plus, second was 25lbs, third 23lbs, and right on down the line with impressive catches. The schooling fish made a showing for the first time since the storm and were found in numerous places from Tin House Cove to Indian Prairie Canal. These fish were easy to catch when they came up, chasing tiny shad, just throw a rattling crankbait at them and hold on. Once these fish went down they could be caught on a variety of plastic baits.

The Big “O” got hot this weekend!

Okeechobee Fishing Report: Feeding Frenzy

The fishing continues to be very good. Stable weather with temps in the high 70’s has helped greatly, raising our water temp back up to around 70 degrees. Moving water is still the key to this present pattern, finding an area with current is still the key to catching numbers of fish.
Today I fished with Brian Reimers from Washington state, Brian is an accomplished tournament fisherman, and was a pleasure to fish with. We started our day with a ride up the Kissimmee River to the locks. The first shiner to hit the water was engulfed immediately by a 7lb bass, that was swollen with roe and looking for a place to spawn. Of course with immediate results like that we both thought we would sit right there and slay them, an hour later we still did not have another bite, so we moved. In fact we moved 3 more times and only caught one more fish. At this point we went to the lake and pecked around for a couple hours catching 10 or 11 fish. Finally we found a spot that was holding lots of fish and for the next three hours steadily caught one fish after another. Our total for the day was 47 fish, the largest being the 1st fish of the day a 7lber. Right now area that are holding fish are what I call (area specific) meaning that the fish are not spread out everywhere, they are in small little areas that can be found with patience & perseverence.
